A Legacy of Leadership: Celebrating Steve Zupon's 32-Year Journey with LIUNA Local 563

After more than 32 years with LIUNA Local 563, Steve Zupon is retiring, leaving behind a legacy from his early days of working concrete to his role as Business Agent.

From Concrete to Leadership: A Journey of Growth

Steve joined the Laborers Union in April 1993, working for Independent Curb in Buffalo, Minnesota. His natural leadership and dedication to his fellow workers led to his appointment as auditor of Local 563 in 2009. He went on to serve on the Executive Board in 2011. In March 2014, he took on the role of Business Agent for south Hennepin and Scott counties, and in May 2017, he became the Business Agent for the St. Cloud and outstate areas.

Looking back on Minneapolis's evolving skyline, Steve finds satisfaction in the built environment he contributed to. The projects he worked on early in his career now stand as landmarks in our city's landscape, physical reminders of construction workers’ essential role in building Minnesota's future.

A Leader's Impact Through the Eyes of Others

Joel Smith, President and Business Manager of LIUNA Minnesota and North Dakota, shares his thoughts on Steve's retirement:

"Steve Zupon embodies what makes our union strong. Starting as a Laborer, he worked his way up through determination and a commitment to his fellow members. As a Business Agent, he brought that same work ethic to representing our members' interests. Steve's ability to connect with workers, understand their challenges, and fight for their rights has made a lasting difference in countless lives. His thoughtful approach to problem-solving and genuine care for our members' wellbeing will be deeply missed."

Throughout his career, Steve has emphasized the transformative power of union membership. His words perfectly capture this: "You don't know what you don't know. Becoming a Laborer and building a successful career is the best thing that happened to me with no college education." This perspective particularly resonates with those seeking meaningful career paths outside traditional academic ones.

Building Lasting Bonds

The relationships Steve built over three decades stand as one of his proudest achievements. The mentors who guided him and the friendships he formed reflect the strong bonds that define our union community. These connections have enriched his journey and strengthened our entire organization.

Steve's impact extends beyond his official roles. His steady presence, practical wisdom, and commitment to fairness have helped shape Local 563 into the strong organization it is today. As he steps into retirement, his influence continues through the many members he has mentored and supported throughout his career.

We thank Steve Zupon for his 32+ years of service and dedication to our union family. Cheers to a well-earned retirement!

In His Own Words

As Steve prepares for his next chapter, he shares these parting thoughts: "I would like to thank my family, friends, co-workers and everyone else who has supported me and contributed to my success throughout a rewarding career as a Laborer in the LIUNA organization."
