LIUNA Minnesota & North Dakota is committed to sustainable and environmentally responsible mining of iron, copper, nickel and precious metals. We support doing mining the right way, creating family-supporting jobs while adhering to the strictest environmental and safety standards to ensure safe working conditions, and that clean air, clear water, and healthy soil continue to support our quality and way of life.
Minnesota is home to one of the world’s largest deposits of iron, copper, nickel and precious metals. Responsible mining will continue to create significant and sustainable economic growth and stability to Minnesota communities and our entire state for generations to come, including thousands of family-supporting jobs, billions of dollars for schools, and tens of millions of dollars in local and state tax revenues annually. Windmills (each containing about four tons of copper), solar panels, electric cars, catalytic converters, life-saving medical devices, military-defense systems, computers and cell phones all rely on precious metals that need to be mined. They should be mined here.
Today’s mining process is environmentally responsible, precise and thoughtful. It utilizes modern technology and scientific knowledge to better predict, plan for, and prevent or control adverse environmental impacts. Minnesota has some of the strictest environmental standards in the world, which mining companies are required to meet or exceed during the environmental review and permitting process.
We support letting the process play out and going with the science.
