Building a Better Minnesota

To initially become a LIUNA member you must first obtain empolyment with a Signatory Union contractor employer working under a collective bargaining agreement with the Laborers District Council of MN & ND. Union contractor employers can be found by clicking here. You may search by contractor name, location, work category and more.

New hires are given a 7 day trial period by the contractor employer. On or before the 8th day of employment you must become and remain a LIUNA member in good standing as a condition of employment. New Laborers participating under the Builders, Highway Heavy and Environmental collective bargaining agreements will be registered in the Laborers Apprenticeship Program. Members can utilize their local Union job referral system to help maintain employment throughout their career.

Top Projects

Finance and Commerce (F&C) news has selected their 2017 Top Projects awards in Minnesota and the winners include another group of union built projects including the Rochester Mayo Civic Center Convention Center Expansion, the skillfully restored Minnesota State Capitol building and the massive St. Croix Crossing Bridge near Stillwater.   All three of these projects were built by Union contractors and skilled Union tradesmen and women under Project Labor Agreements.

According to F&C, an independent panel of judges looked at the degree of difficulty, creativity in design, innovative construction techniques, cooperation among contractors and management and sustainability efforts to rate each project submitted.

A key goal of LIUNA Training is to develop and facilitate Construction Craft Laborer training that will enhance LIUNA members' skills, promote workplace safety, offer job and career opportunities for a diverse workforce, and enable members to obtain and maintain employment that provides family-supporting wages and benefits. This is accomplished by offering an extensive curriculum of courses throughout the year. Training coincides with the construction industry’s schedule and offers the majority of its courses between November and April. Day courses are offered year-round.

Courses are conducted in our beautiful 44,000 square foot facility in Lino Lakes, Minnesota. The training center consists of classrooms, meeting rooms, a welding area, three 6,000 square foot hands-on training bays and administrative offices. Our instructors are highly qualified and certified to offer a full range of course. Our facility is recognized as an authorized provider of industry specific courses by the Asbestos Abatement Unit of the Minnesota Department of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Our facilities’ enrollment capacity permits up to 150 trainees per week in various construction, environmental and safety skills courses. We offer this training as a benefit to LIUNA members and signatory contractors. Our goal is to create opportunities by educating and training skilled Construction Craft Laborers.

We take great pride in the Construction Craft Laborers’ Apprenticeship Program. The Apprenticeship Program is a mandatory, state regulated program that has been designed for the benefit of both LIUNA members and our signatory contractors. The knowledge and skills of our certified instructors, obtained through continuing education, are passed on to apprentices. The courses are designed to make LIUNA members safer and more productive and to give members an opportunity to grow in knowledge and skill level through classroom and on-the-job training.

To become an apprentice in the Laborers’ Apprenticeship Program you must first obtain employment with one of our signatory contractors. Click this link to the Minnesota Laborers-Employers Cooperation & Education Trust (LECET) searchable union contractor directory:
